Google AI Mode now books home services for you: why ranking there is becoming a sales channel

SUMMARY

Google's Robby Stein announced that AI Mode now has direct links to research and book home services, through partners including Angi, Thumbtack, Housecall Pro and Jobber, with ServiceTitan coming soon. It is live in the US. AI Mode now picks a shortlist of local businesses and shows booking slots, so a business that is not in the answer may never get the call.

Most people think of AI Mode as a place to ask questions and read answers. This week Google showed it can do more: help you fix a problem and book the person who fixes it.

What Google announced

Robby Stein of Google posted on X that Google is making it easier to research and book home services, with direct links in AI Mode. The partners named are Angi, Thumbtack, Housecall Pro and Jobber, with ServiceTitan coming soon. He said it is available now in the US.

He described his own case. A main line at home backed up and water was coming up fast. He opened AI Mode and described the situation. In his words, it compared local pricing, checked reviews and made recommendations based on his situation. He booked a plumber who came out and fixed it.

What it looks like

This is AI Mode answering the request “help me find a handyman to assemble a bed and dresser tomorrow”.

Google AI Mode answer for a handyman request, showing two local businesses with star ratings, review counts, open status, addresses, a short description and bookable time slots

The answer says it found several local handyman services with online availability tomorrow, plus a few more that can give a quote, and it gives “direct links to book”. Each business shows:

  • a star rating and the number of reviews
  • whether it is open now, and its address
  • a short description, such as “rapid response times and seamless online booking”
  • bookable time slots

The searcher does not open ten websites. They read a short list and tap a time.

What this means for local businesses

The first page of results used to decide who got the click. Now AI Mode decides who gets on the shortlist, and the booking can happen from there. These are my views, not Google’s:

  • Being in the answer is the new first position. If you are not listed, the customer may never see your name.
  • Online booking is part of ranking. The answer shows people who have availability and can be booked. A business with no online booking is harder to include.
  • Reviews do the selling. The descriptions in the answer talk about speed and ease of booking. Those are the things a review can say.
  • This will not stay in home services. Any local business where people book a time, such as clinics, salons, repair shops and tutors, could see the same pattern. Google has only announced home services so far.

Google has not said how AI Mode chooses which businesses to show.

What to do

  1. Check the platforms. If you run a home services business in the US, see whether you are on Angi, Thumbtack, Housecall Pro or Jobber, and ask them how AI Mode requests reach you.
  2. Complete your Google Business Profile. Services, hours, area, photos and a clear description. See how local pages are found in AI Mode.
  3. Offer real booking slots online, including same-day and next-day.
  4. Ask for reviews that describe the job: what was fixed, how fast, what it cost.
  5. Test it yourself. Describe your own typical job in AI Mode, and again with an emergency, and see who is shown. Take a screenshot every week.
  6. Track where bookings come from in your booking software.

This is live in the US only for now.
