Your Best Buy, Walmart or Target listing now matters for ChatGPT too: a 15-minute audit

SUMMARY

WISLR found that 56% of ChatGPT's 'Shop at' buttons went to retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Target or Amazon. Whether you like it or not, the shopper may land on a retailer's page for your product. Check that page for price, stock, title, photos and description, the same way you check your own site.

Many brands spend most of their effort on their own website. The WISLR test suggests that can be the wrong place to look. In its four-brand test, 56% of the “Shop at” buttons went to a big retailer and about 5% went to the brand’s own store. WISLR’s own advice is that for many shopping answers the button goes to a retailer whatever you do, so your listing there is where the shopper lands.

“Big-box retailer” just means a large chain store, like Best Buy, Walmart, Target or Amazon.

WISLR also reports that Profound counted 22.5 million retailer offers in ChatGPT Shopping’s product cards in March 2026, with Walmart holding the most first-position offers and Target the broadest presence. Retailer links in ChatGPT are not new. The new part is one retailer button under each recommended product.

The audit

Open your product on each retailer where you sell it. Then check these six things.

CheckWhat to look forExample of a problem
PriceSame as your own site, or a reason it differsYour site says $89, Walmart says $99
StockIn stock, with a believable delivery date”Out of stock” on the product ChatGPT recommends
TitleBrand, product name and model, plain words”NEW!! Best Shoe 2026 FREE SHIP”
PhotosAt least 4, clear, showing the real productOne blurry photo
DescriptionSize, materials, what is in the box, who it suitsOne line copied from the box
ReviewsA normal number, no obvious problems you can fixReviews say “sizes are wrong” and the size chart is wrong

A worked example (made-up)

A small brand sells a water bottle on its own site and on Target. It runs the audit and finds:

  • Price on its site: $24. On Target: $29, from an old price nobody updated.
  • Title on Target: “Bottle blue 750”.
  • Description on Target: “Bottle.” Nothing else.
  • Photos on Target: one.

None of these needs a developer. The brand fixes the price, writes the title as “[Brand] Insulated Water Bottle 750 ml, Blue”, adds size, material and care details, and uploads four photos. The cost is one afternoon.

We cannot tell you the change will make ChatGPT recommend this bottle more. We can say that if a shopper clicks a “Shop at Target” button, the page they see is now a much better one.

What we do not know

WISLR did not find out how OpenAI chooses the store behind a button. It found no announced retailer partnership or affiliate program that week. So this audit is about being ready, not about a proven way to win the button.

What to do

  1. List every retailer that sells your product.
  2. Run the six checks on each listing.
  3. Fix price and stock first, because a wrong price loses a sale on the spot.
  4. Write down the date, and check again once a month.
  5. Keep your own product page strong too. See how to make the button point to your own store.
