Why ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google cite different sources

SUMMARY

Each AI uses its own methods and favorite sources, and which ones get cited changes often. So there is no single AI ranking to chase. Build real authority, be present in several places, and test the prompts your customers use.

A common question from marketers: “How do I rank in ChatGPT?” In practice, there is no single ranking. Here is why.

Every AI has different habits

  • No universal top source. Search Engine Land reported AI citation data showing no single source works for every brand.
  • Perplexity: one practitioner read Perplexity’s search stream directly and reported it cites YouTube heavily, while Reddit gets retrieved but ignored. That is the reverse of what he saw in ChatGPT. For local searches, Google Business Profile and place listings came first. This is a single person’s testing, so treat it as a clue, not a rule.
  • ChatGPT: reasoning (“Thinking”) mode changes which brands get cited, per Search Engine Land. An Ahrefs study reported by Search Engine Journal says ChatGPT’s most-cited sites tilt toward primary sources.
  • Bing matters for ChatGPT. One case study reported that even top brands disappeared in ChatGPT without a Bing presence.

And it keeps changing

A Semrush study reported that 40 to 60% of cited sources change from one month to the next. Nothing stays put.

What tends to help, across sources

Several guides repeat these ideas. Most come from tool vendors, so test them yourself:

  • Original data and your own research.
  • Answer-first writing: a short direct answer near the top of the page.
  • Being included in roundup articles by others, since AI tools build recommendations from them.
  • Letting AI crawlers in. Check your robots.txt does not accidentally block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot.
  • Fresh content. One guide says the last two or three months dominate citations, but that claim is unverified.

What to do

  1. Write down 20 questions your customers ask AI.
  2. Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google every month, and note who gets cited.
  3. Fix the gaps: missing pages, missing mentions, or blocked crawlers.
  4. Do not believe anyone who promises a guaranteed AI ranking.
