How to audit what AI tools say about your brand: a six-question worksheet

SUMMARY

Ask the same six questions in each AI tool every month, record the answer and the sources it links to, score accuracy, completeness and sources from 0 to 2, and fix the source pages rather than arguing with the tool. This is our own method, not an official one, and answers vary from run to run.

When someone asks an AI tool about your business, the answer can be right, outdated or simply wrong. You cannot edit the answer, but you can find out what it says and fix the pages it relies on. This worksheet is our own method. It is not an official procedure from Google, OpenAI or Microsoft, and none of them guarantees that changing a page changes an answer.

Four steps to audit what AI tools say about your brand: ask six questions, record the answers, score them, and fix the source pages

Step 1: ask six questions

Use the same wording each month, in a new chat, in every tool you care about. Replace [Brand] with your name.

  1. Who is [Brand] and what does it do?
  2. What does [Brand] sell, and what does it cost?
  3. Is [Brand] trustworthy? What do customers say?
  4. How does [Brand] compare with [competitor]?
  5. Where is [Brand] based, and how do I contact it?
  6. What is [Brand] best known for, and what is it not suited to?

Step 2: record what you see

Keep one row per tool and question. Columns: date, tool, exact prompt, short summary of the answer, tone (positive, neutral, negative), and every source or link the tool shows. Save a screenshot if the tool allows it.

Step 3: score each answer

Measure012
AccuracyA key fact is wrongMostly right, one errorAll facts right
CompletenessMissing or vaguePartialCovers what a buyer needs
SourcesNone or irrelevantSome third-party onlyIncludes your own pages

A total of 6 is the best answer. Treat any 0 as a task.

Step 4: fix the source, not the tool

What you findLikely action
Wrong factFind the page it came from, correct your own page first, then ask the other site to correct theirs
Outdated factUpdate the page, show an honest date, and fix public profiles
Missing factPublish a clear page that states it, in plain words
Cites a weak sourceStrengthen your own page on the same topic
Negative toneRead the reviews it draws on and respond honestly; do not fake positives

Google’s guide says Merchant Center feeds and Business Profiles can help products and services be visible in AI responses, so check that your entries match your site. Our brand entity clean-up guide covers keeping one name and story across the web.

Limits to remember

AI answers change between runs, tools and countries. One odd answer is a note, not a trend. Look for patterns over three months. Do not ask a tool to “remember” a correction and treat it as fixed.

What to do

  1. Copy the six questions into a spreadsheet today and run them once.
  2. Score each answer and list every 0.
  3. Fix the two easiest source pages this week.
  4. Repeat on the first of each month, alongside our 20-prompt AI visibility test.
