Google Discover Adds Follow Buttons and Social Media Posts

Google is changing how Discover works. Starting September 2025, you will see follow buttons, social media posts, and dedicated spaces for creators and publishers right inside Discover.

What’s New in Discover

  1. Follow creators and publishers directly
Google said: “When you see content from a creator or publisher in Discover, you can tap to follow them right there. Once you do, you’ll find a dedicated space with more of their content.”
  2. Social posts in Discover feed
Google confirmed: “We’re expanding the types of content in Discover. In addition to articles and videos, you’ll now see social posts from platforms like YouTube Shorts, X and Instagram.”
  3. Preview before following
According to Google: “You’ll be able to preview the types of content a publisher or creator shares before deciding to follow them, helping you make informed choices.”

Why This Matters

For UsersFor Creators & Publishers
More personalization: one feed with news, videos, and social posts.Social posts and short videos gain visibility in Discover, not just in apps.
Easy follow option to stay updated.A “dedicated space” means stronger brand recall and repeated impressions.
Mix of formats: richer, more engaging experience.Cross-posting content across website, YouTube, Instagram, X becomes more valuable.

What Publishers and Creators Should Do

  • Diversify content formats: articles, reels, posts, Shorts.
  • Optimize branding: clear names, recognizable logos, high-quality previews.
  • Be consistent: regular updates help build follower trust.
  • Think beyond SEO: social signals now influence visibility in Discover.

The Bigger Picture

This update blurs the lines between social media feeds and Google Discover. It creates a hybrid model where Google wants to keep users engaged with a mix of traditional web content and real-time social updates.

For India and other markets, this means regional creators on Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and X have a new distribution channel. Publishers should now treat Discover as a place to grow direct audience relationships, not just a traffic source.

TL;DR:

  • Discover now has follow buttons and dedicated spaces for publishers/creators.
  • Social media posts (YouTube Shorts, Instagram, X) will appear alongside articles.
  • Google says these changes help people “catch up with the creators and publishers you care about.”
