What’s Happening?
Scientists and Google DeepMind are working together on an exciting project called DolphinGemma. They’re trying to “talk” to dolphins!
Dolphins are super smart animals. They make lots of sounds like clicks, whistles, and squeaks. These sounds might be a kind of dolphin language!
But… humans can’t understand dolphin sounds on their own. That’s where AI (artificial intelligence) comes in.
Why Dolphins?
- Dolphins are very smart.
- They live in groups and “talk” to each other in ways we don’t understand yet.
- Scientists believe if we can understand dolphin sounds, we can learn more about their lives, feelings, and even help protect them!
Why Is This Important?
- Dolphins have one of the biggest brains in the ocean!
- They live in groups and seem to “chat” with each other a lot.
- If we understand dolphin language, we could learn more about their lives, protect them better, and even learn more about how language first began on Earth!
What is DolphinGemma?
- DolphinGemma is like a big brain made by computers.
- It listens to thousands of dolphin sounds recorded by real scientists in the wild.
- Then, it tries to find patterns, like “When dolphin A makes this click sound, dolphin B answers with a whistle!”
It’s like figuring out a secret dolphin language!
How Does It Work? (Simple Steps)
- Collect Dolphin Sounds
Scientists record dolphin noises underwater. - Teach the Computer
They show the sounds to DolphinGemma, like teaching it words in a new language. - Find the Patterns
DolphinGemma looks for connections — like when two dolphins “talk back” to each other. - Learn Dolphin “Words”
Over time, the computer starts guessing what dolphins might be “saying”!

(I’ve recreated a simple version for your understanding below)
| Step | What Happens | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Record dolphin sounds | Click-click |
| 2 | Feed sounds to AI | 🧠💻 |
| 3 | AI finds patterns | 📈🔍 |
| 4 | Understand dolphin talk | 🗣🐬💬 |

Left: A mother spotted dolphin observes her calf while foraging. She will use her unique signature whistle to call the calf back after he is finished. Right: Spectrogram to visualize the whistle.
Cool Facts About Dolphins:
- Dolphins have names for each other! (They use special whistles.)
- They can play games and even use tools!
- Dolphins help each other when one is sick or hurt.
What’s Next?
Scientists hope that DolphinGemma will grow smarter and one day help us have real conversations with dolphins!
Wouldn’t it be awesome to say “hello” to a dolphin and understand the answer?
AI is like a super detective helping us understand the secret language of dolphins!
Final Thoughts
DolphinGemma is like a magical underwater detective!
You can learn more about the Wild Dolphin Project on their website.
One day, thanks to Google AI, maybe we will be able to say “hello” to a dolphin and understand their answer.
Stay curious and keep exploring!
