The way people discover content on Google is changing fast. With the rollout of AI Mode (and in AI Overviews), Google is no longer just showing a list of blue links. It is giving users instant, AI-generated answers at the top of the page. And these summaries often include a few selected sources.
So the big question for smaller publishers is: how can you get featured in those AI Mode?
Here is a simple, actionable guide.
Be Original. Be the Expert.
AI Mode Overviews are trained to pull from trusted and unique sources. If your content is just a copy of what others are saying, you will not get picked.
What you can do:
- Publish original reporting, expert insights, or real user reviews.
- Interview local voices, niche experts, or professionals in your space.
- Add author bios, review credits, and mention your experience in the topic.
This builds trust with both readers and search engines.
Write in a Way That AI Can Understand
Google’s AI reads your page like a robot, not a human. So your content should be easy to scan, clear, and structured.
Try this:
- Start with a quick summary at the top.
- Use bullet points and question-based subheadings.
- Write short, factual sentences that clearly answer common questions.
Think of how you would explain something to a beginner in two lines. That is what AI prefers.
Focus on Entities, Not Just Keywords
In the past, SEO was about using the right keywords. Now it is also about entities. These are the people, places, brands, or topics your article is really about.
How to use this:
- Mention specific names, places, and tools in your content.
- Use schema markup like “about” or “mentioned” tags on your site.
- Link to related articles on your own site that cover similar topics.
This helps Google understand the full context of your article.
Mix Trending and Evergreen Content
AI Mode Overviews look for content that is both timely and informative. That means you should balance:
- Fresh, relevant articles on what is happening now
- Long-form guides or FAQs that stay useful over time
For example, if you cover education, you might write a guide on “Best Colleges in 2025” along with a daily blog on admission trends.
Use Smart Content Templates
Certain types of articles work very well in AI Mode because they answer questions clearly.
Some formats that work:
- “X vs Y – Which one is better?”
- “10 facts about [topic] you should know”
- “Beginner’s guide to [topic] in 2025”
These are easy for AI to read and summarize.
Build Your Brand Name Across the Web
Even if your own website does not rank high, if your brand is mentioned in trusted places, you can still appear in AI Mode Overviews.
What you can do:
- Get guest posts on bigger sites in your niche.
- Comment on platforms like Reddit or Quora using your brand identity.
- Share your insights on LinkedIn or X where journalists and editors are active.
These mentions send strong signals to Google’s AI models.
Think Collaboration, Not Competition
You are not competing with the New York Times or BBC. Instead, your job is to become the go-to source in your niche or region.
How to do that:
- Be the first to cover hyper-local stories or underserved topics.
- Partner with other small publishers to share links or co-create content.
- Create a clear About page, contributor bios, and explain why you cover what you cover.
Remember, AI is trying to find trusted, focused voices. You can be one.
My 2 Cents:
Google’s AI Mode is not just a threat to small publishers. It is also a huge opportunity. If you play it smart, write with clarity, and focus on what makes your content original and helpful, you can still be discovered and cited at the top of Google.
Start with one story. Make it strong. Then keep building.
