Last year the advice was “get on Reddit, AI loves it.” This year the data is messier. Here is what the studies reported, and why they do not agree.
Reddit is still cited a lot
A Peec AI analysis of 30 million sources, reported by Search Engine Land, found Reddit was the single most-cited source across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Another study found AI engines cite Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn most.
But the picture swings fast
- Promptwatch reported Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86.4% in four days. It could not explain the cause and did not rule out a data-collection problem. Google’s AI products showed no comparable drop.
- Ahrefs reported Reddit appeared in 19.1% of US ChatGPT answers in March but only 2.3% in September. Note Ahrefs counts share of answers while Promptwatch counts share of citations, so the numbers are not directly comparable.
- Tinuiti found Reddit’s share on ChatGPT was above 5% in January, but only 0.1% on Google Gemini. So it depends on the AI.
- Semrush found Reddit’s citation share fell from 15% to 7% when ChatGPT used high-reasoning mode.
Retrieved is not the same as cited
An Ahrefs study found ChatGPT often retrieves Reddit pages but cites them only about 1.93% of the time. Reddit may influence an answer without getting credit.
What kind of Reddit content gets cited
Profound found that 99% of Reddit citations point to a specific discussion thread, not a subreddit home page, a brand profile or corporate content. That means one helpful thread can matter more than a brand account.
What to do
- Do not assume the average number applies to you. Tinuiti warns brands against starting from the aggregate growth figure.
- If you join Reddit conversations, be genuinely useful in the actual threads people ask about. Ahrefs suggests checking whether your page titles and URLs match the sub-questions ChatGPT searches for. (What is fan-out?)
- Spread your bets: Wikipedia, podcasts, YouTube and other publications also drive citations, according to Search Engine Journal.
- Re-check every few months. These numbers change quickly.
