What is query fan-out, and how should it change how you write?

SUMMARY

Query fan-out means an AI turns one question into several smaller searches, then combines the results into one answer. To show up, cover the topic and its follow-up questions properly on one page. Do not build a separate page for every variation.

When you type a question into Google’s AI Mode or ChatGPT, the AI does not just search your exact words. It breaks your question into smaller questions, searches for each, and puts the pieces together. This is called query fan-out.

A simple example

You ask: “What is the best laptop for a student who edits video?”

The AI might quietly search for: laptops with strong graphics, battery life, student budgets, screen quality, and reviews of specific models. Then it writes one answer from all of that.

What the companies say

  • Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use “query fan-out”: running multiple related searches at the same time across subtopics and data sources, then combining the results.
  • ChatGPT: one source says OpenAI’s documentation describes rewriting your prompt into search queries before it looks anything up. Others report that Gemini, ChatGPT, Copilot and Grok all break complex prompts into related sub-questions, even if they do not use the same term.

What it means for your content

The main advice in the sources is the same:

  • Cover the topic broadly in one page, rather than many thin pages.
  • Answer the likely follow-up questions inside that page, as clearly labelled sections or question headings.
  • Find the follow-ups using free tools: People Also Ask, “People also search for”, Google autocomplete, and tools like AnswerThePublic.

A warning

Do not build a separate page for every possible fan-out variation. One source notes Google’s guidance treats building pages to manipulate AI answers that way as a violation of its scaled content abuse policy. One page that thoroughly covers a topic beats twenty near-duplicates.

Numbers to treat carefully

One analysis of ChatGPT found commercial prompts triggered fan-out 78.3% of the time versus 3.1% for informational ones. But it studied only 90 prompts and the author calls it observation, not a controlled test. Claims like “AI Mode runs 8 to 12 searches” come from agency and vendor blogs and are unverified. Use them as rough ideas.

Your action list

  1. Pick your 5 most important pages.
  2. For each, list the 8 to 10 questions a curious reader would ask next.
  3. Make sure the page answers them, with clear headings.
  4. Do not stuff. If a question does not belong, leave it out.
