Opinion: Your Forum. Google’s Answer Box. SEO in 2025

Structured data was supposed to help search engines understand your site better.
Now it just helps them display more of your content without sending you traffic.

Google says:

But in reality?
You add markup. They take the content. Users get answers. You get… nothing.

DiscussionForumPosting – Just a Cleaner Way to Eat Your Community

You spent years building a forum.

Real people. Real opinions. Real threads with depth.
And now Google wants you to label each part:

  • The question
  • Each reply
  • The upvotes
  • Who said what
  • When they said it

All in structured form.

Why?
So they can pick the best parts and show them directly in search.
Preview cards. AI summaries. “Helpful” snapshots.
Everything except the actual visit to your page.

It’s like building a buffet and then watching the guests eat from the display window.

QAPage – One Correct Answer. Zero Clicks.

QAPage is even worse.

Let’s say someone asks: “How many calories in a banana?”
You mark it up, add the answer, author, timestamp – everything.

What happens?

Google shows the full answer in the search box itself.
Sometimes even says “According to yoursite.com…”
But the user?
They scroll. They’re done. They never click.

Your content just became a source citation.

Congratulations. You’ve been turned into a footnote on your own article.

Recipes. Reviews. Products. Forums. What’s Left?

This isn’t just about forums or Q&A.
This is across the board.

  • Recipe: Full ingredient list in the SERP
  • Review: Your star rating, summary, even pros and cons – no visit needed
  • Product: Price, availability, seller – all visible up top
  • HowTo: Step-by-step breakdown, Google-hosted
  • DiscussionForumPosting: Community wisdom, repackaged

All perfectly tagged. All perfectly extractable.

What started as helpful metadata has now become clean scraping instructions.

So What Does Google Want From You?

They want:

  • Your content
  • Your formatting
  • Your schema
  • Your traffic? Not so much.

It’s the classic platform play:

And publishers?
We just keep doing it.
Because if you don’t, you’re invisible.
And if you do, you’re readable — but not clickable.

SEO in 2025 = Be Helpful Enough to Be Stolen

You’re no longer writing for readers.
You’re feeding a machine that summarizes you faster than your own writer can finish their byline.

Google doesn’t need to kill your website.
It just needs to answer users before they reach it.

And that’s exactly what structured data is doing now.
At scale. With your help.

So Do You Have a Choice?

No.
You either add the markup and give Google the content in a nicely labelled box.
Or you stay invisible and irrelevant.

You either become “eligible” for search visibility…
Or you don’t exist at all.

But Maybe, Just Maybe…

Maybe your content shows up in AI summaries.
Maybe a few users click through.
Maybe Google rewards clean markup with better rankings.

There’s always that light at the end of the tunnel, right?

Except no one knows if it’s hope…
Or just the headlight of another algorithm update.

Either way – markup, smile, and keep feeding the machine.

Because in SEO, what helps?
No one really knows.
