YouTube cuts reach for reposted Shorts and tests 'Ask YouTube' inside Shorts

SUMMARY

YouTube says it will recommend original Shorts more and reduce reach for channels that mostly re-upload other creators' clips. It is also testing a way to ask questions about a Short. Both are early, and YouTube has not given full details.

If you publish on YouTube, two October announcements matter. Here is what changed.

1. Less reach for reposted clips (October 1)

YouTube is adjusting its recommendations to favour original Shorts and reduce reach for channels that mostly re-upload other creators’ clips with little change. YouTube’s Creator Liaison, Rene Ritchie, announced it in a video on the Creator Insider channel.

One detail to note: according to Search Engine Journal, the video does not say anything about creators who cut Shorts from their own long videos. So we do not know how those are treated.

2. “Ask YouTube” inside Shorts (October 12)

YouTube plans a small, English-only test that lets viewers ask questions about selected Shorts. It is also adding mobile feeds to help people find similar creators. No start date or list of countries was given.

Earlier, on September 23, Search Engine Journal reported YouTube is adding shopping features to Ask YouTube. These may organise product review videos into comparison tables.

In May 2026 YouTube said it would automatically label undisclosed photorealistic AI content and move AI labels to more visible places. The coverage notes one in five Shorts recommended to new users is AI-generated, so this matters most for Shorts.

Why it matters

  • Original work is being rewarded. If your channel is a repost channel, expect pressure.
  • YouTube is becoming a question-and-answer place, not just a video feed. That matches what Search Engine Land argues: YouTube is no longer optional for SEO now that AI Overviews often cite video.

What to do

  1. Add your own voice, commentary or new angle to every clip you use.
  2. Say clearly what each Short answers, in the title and the first words you speak, so a question-based feature can understand it.
  3. Label AI-made content accurately.
  4. Treat Ask YouTube as a test. Do not rebuild your plan around it yet.
