OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Go in India at Rs. 399 to Make AI More Affordable

OpenAI has announced the launch of ChatGPT Go, a new subscription tier designed to bring advanced AI features to Indian users at an affordable price. Priced at Rs. 399 per month, the plan offers expanded usage limits and payment flexibility, making it easier for individuals and professionals to access AI tools in their daily work.

The new tier is positioned between the free plan and higher-priced subscriptions, giving users access to many of OpenAI’s most popular features at a fraction of the cost. Subscribers will now get:

  • 10 times higher message limits compared with the free version
  • 10 times more image generations for creative projects
  • 10 times more file uploads for document analysis and data tasks
  • Double the memory to carry context across conversations

By bundling these upgrades, OpenAI aims to ensure users who rely on ChatGPT for learning, productivity, and content creation can work without frequent restrictions.

India First, Global Expansion Later

The launch is currently exclusive to India, with OpenAI calling the country a key testing ground. All subscriptions in India will now be priced in Indian Rupees (INR) and can be purchased using UPI, the widely adopted digital payments platform.

OpenAI noted that making ChatGPT more affordable has been one of the most frequent requests from users worldwide. By starting in India, the company hopes to learn from feedback before expanding the Go tier to other countries.

Why This Matters

India has one of the fastest-growing bases of AI users, from students and startups to professionals in tech, media, and education. The lower price point is expected to make premium AI tools more accessible to millions of users who previously found global subscription costs prohibitive.

This move could also accelerate AI adoption in everyday tasks like language learning, exam preparation, business planning, coding, and digital marketing. By pricing ChatGPT Go in line with Indian digital services and offering UPI payments, OpenAI is signaling its commitment to deeper local integration.

The Bigger Picture

While advanced AI features were once limited to high-priced plans, the new Go tier shows how AI companies are adjusting to local markets. With India as the starting point, the global rollout of affordable AI subscriptions could reshape how people worldwide use AI in personal and professional life.

In the words of OpenAI, ChatGPT Go is about bringing more power to more people, at the right price.
