Google’s AI Mode Is Here – But Publishers Still Own the Breaking News Game (For Now)

Google just rolled out its AI Mode in India under the Search Generative Experience (SGE) label. On paper, it promises smart summaries, fewer clicks, and instant clarity.

But when we actually used it on real-world Indian queries — news, jobs, exams — the cracks showed up fast.

Here’s your ground report.

1. It’s Not Real-Time. Not Even Close.

Search “Iran attacks US base” or “SBI PO notification 2025”.

  • AI Mode shows summaries from yesterday or worse
  • All tab shows news published 5-30 minutes ago
  • Indian publishers like Hindustan, NDTV, BankersAdda break the story
  • AI Mode skips them, or picks old data

Why?

Because AI Mode doesn’t crawl live updates. It pulls from already-indexed, stable content. No chaos, no mess, but also no urgency. So breaking news? Still a job for classic Google.

2. Local News Signals Are Weak

Back in the day, Google Search had a US-bias. Over time, it learned to rank Indian sites first for Indian users.

But AI Mode feels like a throwback.

  • Global sites like CNBC and Washington Post show up first
  • Indian sites with the real scoop? Buried or missing
  • For job exams, it shows Guidely or Shiksha. Where’s Jagran or Adda247?

The local signal is broken. Temporarily? Probably. But right now, it’s not India-first.

3. English is Fancy. Too Fancy.

The summaries are fluent, but often too polished.

  • Sounds like a foreign editor summarizing Indian topics
  • Government exam queries lack familiarity
  • Local political stories lose cultural nuance

No one here says “The examination cycle commences post-application verification.” They say “Form bharne ke baad exam kab hoga?”

Right now, AI Mode writes for a generic global user. Not a 22-year-old from Patna prepping for SBI PO.

4. It’s Calm. But Too Calm.

What AI Mode does well:

  • Clean summaries
  • Multi-source aggregation
  • No clickbait

What it lacks:

  • Headline urgency
  • Breaking momentum
  • Media heat

It’s structured. But if you’re chasing speed, trends, or signals — AI Mode is the monk in the newsroom.

5. Still Beta. Still Learning.

This isn’t the final product. Google is watching:

  • What users click
  • What feedback you give
  • What Indian signals it missed

Expect better freshness. Better regional context. More Indian publishers. And maybe even Hinglish support soon.

But today? It’s a backstage assistant, not the anchor.

As Of Today, What to Use When:

Final Take From My End:

Google’s B”AI”T Mode is smart. But not sharp yet.
It knows the data. But doesn’t know the beat.
It simplifies the web. But can’t sense the moment.

Good for summaries. Not for signals.
Good for structure. Not for speed.
Worth trying. But not your default. Yet.
