Opinion: Will Your ₹15L+ SEO Job Still Exist in 2 Years?

Over the last decade, SEO was a quiet growth engine for countless companies. And the people behind it skilled, strategic SEOs often commanded avg. salaries north of ₹15 – ₹1Cr or more

But something’s changing. And fast.

If you’re in SEO today, earning a premium package, and not evolving your skillset and the uncomfortable truth is this: your job could be obsolete in 2 years or less than that

Not because SEO is dead. But because its economics are breaking, and the industry hasn’t adapted fast enough.

What SEO professionals are quietly asking in forums:

On Quora, users ask:

These aren’t fringe voices. These are practitioners. People deep in the work, seeing the early signals.

Why is the ₹15L+ SEO job vulnerable?

Revenue from organic is dropping even if rankings aren’t

The scary part? You’re still ranking. You’re still getting impressions.

But users are:

  • Getting answers from AI Overviews without clicking
  • Discovering brands on YouTube, TikTok, and ChatGPT before they ever hit Google
  • Spending more time in closed ecosystems, not websites

Result: Your traffic holds, but your revenue dips. And suddenly, that ₹20L SEO cost shows up on the CFO’s radar.

AI is automating most of what traditional SEO teams do

From keyword clustering to internal linking, metadata, content briefs, and even SERP audits; GenAI is replacing 80% of the traditional grunt work.

What used to take a team of 3–4 now takes one SEO with a strong GPT + Sheets stack.

You’re being compared to performance marketers and product folks now

SEO used to be its own kingdom. Today, you’re expected to:

  • Prove ROI like paid teams
  • Collaborate like a product manager
  • Distribute content like a media strategist

And the hard truth is: a ₹25L package for “just” organic rankings doesn’t compute anymore unless revenue follows.

So what’s the way forward?

Here’s the pivot we’re seeing from future-ready SEO leaders:

Become a Growth Architect, not an SEO Manager

Own not just rankings but user acquisition, on-site conversion, repeat traffic, and lifetime value.
Speak the language of revenue, CAC, and ROI so its not just impressions and CTR.

Build & own distribution

Ranking is just one channel. Distribution is the multiplier.
Be fluent in:

  • YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels
  • Email & WhatsApp newsletters
  • Community platforms like Reddit, Discord, Quora
  • Smart syndication across partner sites or networks

Get comfortable with tech + monetization

  • Ship microsites, knowledge hubs, tools, templates using no-code + GPT
  • Understand ad revenue models, affiliate loops, CRM funnels, and data capture
  • Think like a media operator: What content makes money and how?

Be a creator not just a strategist

The fastest-growing SEOs are also content creators:

  • Teach what you know on LinkedIn, YouTube, or a personal blog
  • Build personal brand equity that drives inbound, influence, and optionality
  • Turn learnings into public playbooks or courses — people trust practitioners

Master GenAI fluency and teach it to others

It’s not enough to use AI tools.
You need to:

  • Build internal automations/workflows using GPTs + Sheets + APIs
  • Lead AI upskilling inside your team or org
  • Be the one who translates SEO logic into AI prompts and systems

Own your niche deeply — not just your domain broadly

Pick a vertical — travel, auto, fintech, D2C, healthcare — and go deep.
Understand:

  • How the audience thinks and searches
  • How monetization works
  • What’s changing in content consumption

Focus on Ethical SEO & Brand Reputation

  • Own brand safety, transparency, and compliance with evolving search engine policies.
  • Lead initiatives for sustainable SEO that balances growth with user trust and privacy.
  • Ethical positioning will be a differentiator as AI-generated content and spam increase

Emphasize Human Curation & Quality Control

  • AI can generate content, but humans are needed for context, nuance, fact-checking, and editorial quality.
  • Your role evolves to becoming the ultimate quality gatekeeper ensuring trustworthy and high-value content.

Develop Cross-Functional Leadership and Influence

  • Lead cross-team projects that integrate SEO, product, UX, analytics, paid media, and content.
  • Influence strategic business decisions by connecting SEO insights to broader company goals.
  • Become the go-to person for customer intent and behavior analysis, not just traffic numbers

That’s how you make yourself irreplaceable.

My Thoughts:

If you’re earning ₹15–₹50L in SEO today, you’re likely very good at what you do.

But the economics of attention are shifting, and that salary comes with an unspoken question:

Can you drive business value in an AI-dominated discovery ecosystem?

If yes — you’ll become a unicorn hire.
If not — you’ll be seen as a legacy cost.
