Fifty-six percent of Gen Z respondents said that fear of rejection held them back from pursuing a relationship, compared to 51% for millennials. It’s not just about the fear; it’s about the frequency. A typical Gen Zer might get rejected by more people in a week than a boomer has in their entire adult life.

Getting into college is harder than ever. More students are applying, which means more rejections. The average student now applies to about seven colleges, up significantly from previous years. Dylan, a 22-year-old NYU student, applied to roughly 20 schools and received only a few acceptances, which was demoralizing. This can feel overwhelming and arbitrary, leading some students to question their worth.
Job Market: The Ghost Job Phenomenon
In the job market, Gen Z faces another hurdle. They might apply to hundreds of jobs without getting a response. Greenhouse data revealed that 71% of Gen Z applicants reported encountering a “ghost job” in their job search. This can be demotivating and make them feel invisible. As Jon Stross, co-founder of Greenhouse, noted, Gen Z is facing the worst of the numbers game.
Coping with Rejection
So, how do Gen Zers deal with all this rejection? Some develop a “whatever” attitude, while others focus on their passions. As psychologist Angela Duckworth would say, grit and resilience are key to overcoming obstacles. It’s about finding ways to stay positive and keep moving forward.
The Role of Technology
Technology plays a big role in this. It makes interactions more impersonal and can create unrealistic expectations. Social media shows us everyone else’s successes, making our own failures feel worse. As therapist Jeff Guenther puts it, “You’re not being rejected by actual people, but by technology”.
