As students head back to school in the U.S., Google is upgrading Search in a big way not just to answer queries, but to help you learn smarter. The company announced a range of new features for its AI Mode in Search some launching now, and some rolling out soon.
Here’s a clear breakdown starting with the upcoming features you should watch for.
Rolling Out Soon In Google AI Mode
1. Search Live: Real-Time Help Using Your Camera

You’ll soon be able to point your phone camera at:
- A tricky math problem
- A paragraph in a textbook
- A scientific diagram
…and ask Google to explain it.
This feature, called Search Live, will give instant help using visual AI overlays helping you understand what you’re looking at in real-time.
Launch: Coming soon to mobile via Search Labs.
2. Ask Questions About Images and PDFs
You’ll soon be able to upload a:
- Screenshot
- PDF worksheet
- Photo of a page
…and ask Google questions like:
“What does this paragraph mean?”
“Summarize this chart.”
“Explain this equation.”
This feature uses multi-modal AI, allowing users to interact with images and documents not just typed text.
3. Search What You See While Browsing
This feature lets you long-press on any text, image, or graph while reading a website and instantly ask:
- “What does this mean?”
- “Summarize this section.”
- “Is this accurate?”
No need to copy-paste or open new tabs.
This brings AI-powered Search into your natural reading flow.
4. Canvas: Build Smart Study Plans with Google AI
Google is testing a feature called Canvas. It’s designed to help students:
- Set study goals like “Revise 10th-grade biology in 7 days”
- Automatically break them into daily plans
- Suggest topics and learning sequences
It’s like having a study planner powered by Gemini AI.
Features Available Already On AI Mode:
5. Step-by-Step Help in Math and Science
You can now type questions into Google like:
“What is the chemical formula for rust?”
“Solve 2x + 3 = 11”
“How does Newton’s second law work?”
AI Mode in Search will break it down step-by-step, instead of just showing the final answer. This is already live and rolling out to more devices.
6. Reading Comprehension and Text Understanding
Paste a paragraph from your schoolwork and ask:
“What does this passage mean?”
“Explain this in simple words.”
Google’s AI Mode will summarize, define key terms, and help you understand complex content.
7. Follow-Up Questions in AI Overviews
Search now supports multi-step conversations. You can:
- Ask an initial question
- Then follow up naturally:
“What happens next?”
“Why does that matter?”
“Is this similar to…?”
This creates a continuous learning flow, like talking to a tutor.
Availability
- These features are part of Search Labs
- Available in English only
- Rolling out in the U.S. on mobile and desktop (Pixel phones first)
Why You Should Care?
Google is turning Search into more than a tool it’s becoming a learning platform.
With real-time help, document understanding, and smart planning, AI Mode isn’t about quick answers anymore it’s about building understanding.
And once these features roll out globally (especially in India), it could redefine how millions of students study, revise, and prepare.
