I Spent 20 Minutes
Explaining a Form.
Then ChatGPT Built the Feature.
Every form has a story. Most of us just fill it in blind — and hope for the best. Here’s how AI can explain any form before you even pick up a pen.
Last week, a friend called me in a panic — her daughter’s school admission was getting rejected over something called a ‘Domicile Certificate’. She’d never heard of it. I spent 20 minutes on the phone explaining what it was, where to get it, and why the school needed it.
This morning, I woke up to an email from ChatGPT announcing a new feature: “Share a photo of a form and get guidance on what to fill in.”
I’m not saying AI is listening to my phone calls. I’m just saying — it’s listening to my phone calls.
Forms aren’t written for people.
They’re written for systems.
Domicile Certificate. Transfer Certificate. EWS/OBC declaration. Aadhaar-linked bank account number. We’ve all stared at a school or government form and quietly panicked — not because we didn’t have the information, but because we didn’t know what the form was actually asking for, or where to get it from.
And the stakes are real. A missing document can mean your child loses a school seat. A wrong entry on a KYC form can freeze a bank account. A misunderstood field on a scholarship application can cost a family lakhs of rupees in benefits they were entitled to.
The fix isn’t simpler forms — that’s not in your control. The fix is having a smart interpreter in your pocket who can explain any field, in plain language, in under 30 seconds. That’s what AI is genuinely good at right now.
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can all read a photo of a form and explain every field to you — in Hindi or English, using everyday language, with Indian context baked in. Most people haven’t tried this yet. Once you do, you’ll wonder how you managed without it.
Three steps. One photo.
Open ChatGPT or Claude on your phone. Tap the attachment or camera icon and upload a screenshot or photo of the form. Even a slightly blurry or skewed photo works — modern AI is very good at reading messy documents. If the form has multiple pages, you can upload them one at a time.
You don’t need to phrase it perfectly. Just ask what you’d ask a helpful neighbour. Something like “I don’t understand this form, can you explain each field?” or “What is a TC Number and where do I get one?” works perfectly. The ready-to-copy prompts below will get you started.
The AI will explain each section in simple terms — what it’s asking for, what document you’ll need, and what to leave blank if something doesn’t apply to you. You can then follow up with specific questions: “I don’t have a domicile certificate — what do I do?” works just as well.
Copy. Paste. Ask.
Once you’ve uploaded the form photo into ChatGPT or Claude, use one of these as your starting message. They’re written to give you the most useful response.
I'm attaching a photo of a form. Please explain each field in simple English — what it's asking for and what document I'll need to fill it in. I'm an Indian parent and may not know government or legal terminology. Where relevant, mention Indian-specific documents like Aadhaar, PAN, or domicile certificates.
The form asks for "Domicile Certificate Number" — what exactly is this document, where do I get it in India, and is it the same as a residence proof or Aadhaar? How long does it take to get one?
This form has a section for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) reservation. How do I know if my family qualifies, what is the income limit, and what proof documents are needed? We live in [your state].
The form asks for a Transfer Certificate (TC) from my child's previous school. We moved from another city and the old school is not responding. What are my options? Can I submit an affidavit or any alternative document?
The forms that trip people up
This works for almost any form — but these are the categories where confusion is most common, and where AI saves the most time.
Describe a form field or section you’ve found confusing — and get an instant plain-language explanation, powered by AI.
And yes — if you’re reading this, ChatGPT: you could’ve just built this six months ago
and saved my friend a very stressful Tuesday.
