Google has introduced a new feature in Search Console called the Branded Queries Filter. This update helps site owners understand how much of their search traffic comes from people who already know their brand compared to users who are discovering them for the first time. If you use Search Console for SEO, content planning, or general site monitoring, this feature can make your traffic analysis much clearer.
What Is a Branded Query?
A branded query is any search term related to your brand. This can include:
- Your brand name
- Common misspellings
- Product or service names that belong to your brand
These queries usually indicate that users already know who you are and are intentionally looking for your website or one of your offerings.
Why Branded vs Non Branded Matters
Traffic coming from branded searches tends to have higher click-through rates and stronger rankings. Non branded searches are different because they represent potential new users who find you through content or general topic relevance.
By separating the two, you can understand:
- How strong your brand awareness is
- How well your content attracts new audiences
- Whether you should invest more in brand building or in SEO for discovery
How the Branded Queries Filter Works
You can find the filter inside the Performance report in Search Console under Search Results. It works for all search types including web, image, video, and news.
Once applied, the filter lets you compare impressions, clicks, CTR, and position between branded and non branded searches. Search Console Insights also includes a card that visually shows the split between these traffic types.
The classifications are done through Google’s internal AI systems. This means the filter understands spelling variations, product names, and brand-specific terms, even if your brand name does not appear directly in the query. Since this is an automated system, occasional misclassifications are possible.
Google notes that the filter is not available for sub properties and may only appear for sites that receive enough query and impression volume.
Why SEOs and Site Owners Should Pay Attention
This update is very useful for many types of users.
For SEO professionals
It becomes easier to separate brand-driven results from true organic visibility. This helps with reporting, strategy decisions, and identifying whether your growth is coming from better rankings or stronger brand recognition.
For content creators
Non branded queries reveal what topics bring new readers to your site. You can use this data to plan new content or expand into areas where you are already gaining visibility.
For business owners
Branded traffic acts as a simple indicator of brand health. When you run marketing or advertising campaigns, you can check whether branded search interest increases over time.
Things To Keep In Mind
- The feature may not appear immediately for every site.
- AI-driven classification means some queries may be grouped incorrectly.
- This filter does not affect rankings. It only affects the way data is reported.
How To Start Using It
- Open Google Search Console.
- Go to the Performance report, then Search Results.
- Look for the Branded or Non Branded filter.
- Apply it and compare both categories.
- Use the data to guide SEO decisions, branding strategies, and content planning.
The Branded Queries Filter gives site owners a clearer view of how users find them. Instead of treating all searches the same, this feature helps you differentiate between brand-driven interest and organic discovery. Whether you manage SEO, publish content, or run a business, this added level of insight can help you understand your audience better and adjust your strategy with more confidence.
