Google Gemini’s New Privacy Controls: Temporary Chats and Personalisation Features

AI assistants are getting smarter, but also a little nosier. Google’s Gemini is now rolling out memory features that make it feel like a real personal assistant remembering what you’ve said before, your preferences, and even your habits. Alongside this, Google has introduced Temporary Chats, an “incognito mode” for those moments when you don’t want Gemini to remember anything at all.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s changing, how it works, and why it matters.

Personal Context: Gemini With a Memory

Until now, every chat with Gemini started fresh. Now, Personal Context lets Gemini “remember” your past conversations so it can:

  • Suggest better responses based on your earlier queries.
  • Recall details you shared, like your favorite authors, recipes, or project notes.
  • Make your interactions smoother, like a real assistant who knows your style.

Example:

  • If you earlier discussed comic-book themed parties, Gemini may later suggest decor ideas without you repeating it.
  • If you uploaded a BookTok summary, Gemini can recommend similar non-fiction titles.

Control:

  • This feature is on by default but can be turned off under Settings → Personal Context → Your past chats with Gemini.
  • Currently available in limited countries via Gemini 2.5 Pro; wider rollout is expected soon.

Temporary Chats: The Incognito Mode

Sometimes you don’t want your AI assistant to keep a record. For those cases, Google is introducing Temporary Chats.

  • These chats are not saved in your history or Gemini Apps Activity.
  • Data is not used for personalization or AI training.
  • Messages are only stored for up to 72 hours (for service and feedback checks).

This is perfect for sensitive, one-time, or experimental queries you don’t want following you around.

Updated Privacy Settings: “Keep Activity”

Google is also renaming and expanding its privacy settings:

  • “Gemini Apps Activity” is now called “Keep Activity.”
  • If turned on, a sample of your uploads (files, images, videos) can be used to improve Google’s services.
  • If turned off, none of your uploads are used this way.

New option added:

  • Decide whether your audio, video, or screen share interactions (like during Gemini Live) can be used for service improvement.
  • By default, this is off.

Why This Matters

These changes show Google trying to balance utility with privacy:

  • Smarter Gemini: Feels less like a chatbot and more like a real assistant who remembers.
  • User Control: You get clear switches for personalization and incognito use.
  • Data Balance: Google admits it needs data for improvement, but gives you toggles to say yes or no.

Quick Reference Table

Why You Should Care?

Gemini is stepping into a new phase of personalization – one that makes it more helpful, but also more data-hungry. The good part? Google is giving you clear privacy controls this time.

If you want Gemini to act like a smart assistant, keep Personal Context on. If you need discretion, switch to Temporary Chats.

In short: your AI, your choice.
